SMS in a Different Way

Evolve SMS, which you can get for free from the Google Play Store, here, offers many more features that Hangouts does. It also has the same Android KitKat design we’ve all grown to know and love. As you start the app for the first time, you’ll be asked to archive old messages. You can always get them back, should you want to, and it makes the app faster. If you have lots of messages stored on your device, that is.

After that, you’ll notice how easy it is to get around the app. Sliding right and left allows you to move between your messages. If you want to answer a message, just tap the text box at the bottom of the app.

If you want to see a list while trying to find something in particular, just slide your finger left to right and you’ll get said list.

A great thing is that you can get rid of a whole thread of messages at the same time, without the need to delete them one at a time. Just tap the three dots at the top of the EvolveSMS window and, in the menu which will show up, select Batch archive. I never enjoyed the process of deleting one message at a time, so this is a welcome feature.

The search features allows you to search for messages containing a certain word. You can find it at the top of the window, when you slide left to right (the same way you do when looking for the list of messages). My search term in this example is “comanda” and, as you can see, it will find it even if it’s just a part of a word.

While the app makes basic features easy to use, there’s much more to it than meets the eye. If you like more depth in your SMS apps, you’ll certainly find it here. But before moving on to advanced features, it’s worth noting that the app can also be used to send and receive Multimedia Messages (MMS). To send one, just start a new message, tap the “three dots” and then Attach Subject. You’ve now switched to MMS.

Moving on now to advanced features, you can protect the app with a  pattern, so other people can’t read your text messages. The feature can be found in Settings, under Security Settings.

And speaking of settings, you can slide through the menus to find several interesting features. The Notifications area allows you to personalize notifications depending on the contact texting you and even select the color you want your phone’s LED to blink when you’re notified. A personalized ringtone can also be added too. Even the vibration pattern can be customized – very cool!

If you’re a fan of emoji in your Android messages, it supports over 850 emojis in Android or iOS 7 style. It also has full multimedia support for sending pictures, videos, and audio.

Here I covered just a handful some of the features offered in EvolveSMS. After installing it on your device, you’ll find yourself playing with it for hours. To top it all off, you can buy a feature pack and a customization pack via an in-app purchase. It adds things such as themes, Dropbox backup syncing, and more.
